Since 2002 he is Full Professor of Industrial Microbiology and Chemistry of Fermentation. Danilo Porro chaired the teaching activities in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics of the University Milano Bicocca (2003-2010).
Currently he is senator (since 2012) and Pro-Rector (since 2013) for the exploitation of the research at the University of Milano Bicocca.
The research activities look over the applications in the Industrial Biotechnology field. He is responsible of the Biotechnicum Bicocca Center, a biotechnology facility of Università degli Studi di Milano Bicocca, aimed at the development of proprietary industrial strains, fermentation and bioconversion processes for the production of commercially interesting proteins, metabolites and enzymes.
Leader of several projects supported by MIUR, region Lombardia, UE and industries. He is associate editor and had hoc reviewer of different biotech journals, member of EU biotech panels and evaluator of different European research centers. He has been elected member of the Executive Board of the European Federation of Biotechnology and member of different national committees related to the development of Industrial Biotechnology in Italy.
The main scientific activity aims to the understanding of the basic knowledge required to project industrial processes involving microorganisms. These studies include the genetic improvement of microbial strains of industrial interest, metabolic engineering, control and validation of fermentation processes in use in the pharmaceutical, chemical, food and environmental industry. The research group coordinated by prof. Porro has developed, patented and licensed the technology for production and secretion of heterologous proteins, lactic acid, ascorbic acid and for the selection of mutant strains over producing organic acids.
Prof. Porro has published more than 100 among scientific papers, reviews, book chapter and patents.
